Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
